Another joy about open air, site specific pieces is making contact with the birds, beasts and bugs around the area. While I was untying my last year's scraps from the gate, a weasel rushed across the path no more than 6 feet away from me and a swan flew over low over the reeds. There were also birds singing, close and faraway, and spiders, and hover flies jealously guarding their territory from each other and me.
On the way home I saw one butterfly - a tortoiseshell. The swan and the weasel were well past before I could have picked up my camera but the hoverflies occasionally took pause to be still.
